Remnant II: How to Play Co-Op with Friends

Battling through the world of Remnant II can be gruelling, as enemies will push you to the limit of your skill level and beyond. If you need a break from solo play or don’t fancy being beaten to death repeatedly, you may want to enlist the help of a friend. Here’s everything you need to know about playing with your buddies or fellow gamers.

Is There Cross-Play in Remnant II?

First and foremost, Remnant II does not launch with cross-play support, meaning friends on different platforms cannot play together. Players on the same platform can, of course, traverse the worlds together. Remnant II is a next-gen-only game, so its availability is on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X & S. Players on the same family of consoles can play together, so Xbox Series X/S can invite each other.

Console users will need an active membership of Xbox Live/Game Pass Ultimate, or PlayStation Plus to play cooperatively.

A note for fans on Xbox: the Xbox Live Gold service is being discontinued and replaced with Xbox Game Pass Core on September 14th, 2023.

How Do you Unlock Co-Op?

For those wanting to jump in right away with their friends and family, unfortunately, you’re going to have to play through the beginning mission to do so. After the intro cutscene, you are greeted with a pop-up message that states this:

After completing the tutorial and entering your first randomly generated world, players will be prompted with a similar message notifying them that co-op has been unlocked. It’s a minor inconvenience for those looking to partner up right away, but luckily, the tutorial is short, only made longer if you want to exhaust the dialogue of everyone in Ward 13.

How do you Invite a Friend into Your World?

Once you’ve unlocked co-op, simply pause the game and navigate to the system menu. Once there, select “Friends” and choose the person you want to invite. There should be a little icon next to their name that will send the invitation to that person.

It’s that simple, but it’s worth noting that whoever is the host will have the campaign progress, and this will not carry over to other players’ worlds. However, any XP progress, loot, and character Archetype unlocks will carry over for all gamers, regardless of who hosts or not. As the campaign is designed to be replayed with a variety of scenarios, it should be exciting to see what campaign roll you get and how it differs from the hosts.

Does Remnant II Offer Matchmaking?

Remnant II does offer matchmaking, but just like the invite friends feature, players will have to finish the tutorial. Once complete, interacting with the World Stone (the big red crystal your character will respawn at) will bring up a menu that will allow gamers to join other worlds randomly for those that have the option enabled.

Gamers can select their preferred difficulty and choose between fighting aimlessly for fun in adventure mode or embarking on a journey through someone else’s campaign.

If you wish people would join your world, you can enable a setting under the “system” tab titled “Game Session” that, when selected, gives you the option to enable friends only or public, which will allow anyone to join you in your war against the root. There is even an offline option for true solo players.

Whether you’ve joined someone else or vice versa, players won’t be able to participate in the world until the host interacts with the World Stone, which will spit the new players into the game.

How Many Co-Op Players are in Remnant II?

Much like its predecessor, Remnant II can support up to 3 players in a single session with drop-in or drop-out co-op, despite having up to 5 starting classes to choose from and more to unlock as you play. Luckily, players can swap freely between each unlocked Archetype, so no team is truly doomed if they matchmake with 2 other Medics. Though, it is a viable option for some hilarious overhealing.
