Beyond Good And Evil 2 – Everything You Should Know

Beyond Good and Evil 2

When you think of massive games where you can explore entire planets, you might be thinking of No Man’s Sky or Bethesda’s Starfield. However, there’s another game out there that’s been in development longer than those two. That game is Beyond Good And Evil 2.

Fans have been getting little teasers and snippets of information about the game for decades now, but it’s mostly still a mystery. What happened to it? When is it coming out? Will we ever get to live out our space pirate fantasies? Information is limited, but here’s everything you should know about Beyond Good And Evil 2.

When Is Beyond Good And Evil 2 Coming Out?

Sadly, yet unsurprisingly, the Beyond Good And Evil 2 release date is still unknown. The game was first teased in a trailer in May 2008. The game was still untitled back then, but the characters and music in the trailer indicated it was a Beyond Good And Evil game. It was then officially revealed in E3 2017 as Beyond Good And Evil 2.

The game has been in development for so long that it currently holds the record for the longest development ever for a AAA game. The title was previously held by Duke Nukem Forever, which was in development for a little over 14 years (5156 days). Beyond Good And Evil 2 shatters that record with it having more than 15 years in development, and counting.

That’s just counting the days since the May 2008 teaser. There’s evidence to suggest the game was in development far before that date. However, it’s hard to pinpoint an exact date for the start of development based on rumors.

The delays are likely due to Ubisoft’s major troubles involving sexual misconduct allegations and the founder of Ubisoft Montpellier, Michel Ancel’s departure.

Ubisoft hasn’t officially abandoned Beyond Good And Evil 2 yet though. The official game page on Ubisoft’s website is still up, but the last news they released about the game was in 2020.

A gameplay demo in 2019 showed that the game was still in pre-alpha, so progress is going extremely slow. Don’t hold your breath because it’ll probably take a while before the game lands on your console.

What Is Beyond Good And Evil 2 About?

Despite the title, Beyond Good And Evil 2 is a prequel, not a sequel, of the 2003 Beyond Good And Evil. It’s an open-world action RPG where you play as a space pirate captain. The game has been confirmed to be a prequel, but the actual plot has been kept under wraps. So, there’s not much to go on plot-wise for now.

The gameplay is a little more established. You can play single-player or co-op and complete missions together or even wander off alone. The combat uses firearms and melee weapons, which you can augment. You can use a jetpack for a wider range of movement during exploration and combat.

Beyond Good And Evil 2’s open-world boasts gigantic scale. You can explore anything in the solar system known as System 3. You can be fighting guards in a hidden temple, flying around a sprawling city on a hoverbike, and traversing entire planets all in the span of a few minutes.

Judging from the gameplay footage, the cities in the game are larger and more intricate than anything seen in No Man’s Sky. It’s a shame that a game with so much potential has been stuck in development hell for so long.

Since it’s being advertised as a AAA game, it’s expected for the game to launch on the latest consoles. However, Beyond Good And Evil 2 started development long before the PS5 or Xbox Series X & S, so maybe it’ll come out on the PS4 and Xbox One instead?

On their website, Ubisoft states that they “have not defined what gaming platforms BGE2 will release on.” So, no one really knows right now. If players are lucky, maybe Beyond Good And Evil 2 will even come out on the Nintendo Switch. Only time will tell.

Beyond Good And Evil 2 is being developed and published by Ubisoft. Specifically, Ubisoft Montpellier.

Ubisoft is one of the biggest names in the video game development industry, so you’ve probably heard of them. Huge franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry have spawned from this company.

That’s Ubisoft as a whole though, Ubisoft Montpellier has a smaller list of games. Their main claim to fame is the Rayman franchise. Ubisoft Montpellier is the developer behind Rayman 1-3, Origins, Adventures, and Mini.

Other games you might recognize from Ubisoft Montpellier include Just Dance 2014, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, and of course, the first Beyond Good And Evil.
