Gran Turismo

The upcoming Gran Turismo begs the following question if you haven’t seen a trailer yet: How exactly do you adapt a miles-deep racing sim into a functional movie, with all the elements of a film you might expect? Building on a plot that combines the actual video games with one young man’s incredible experience in using those games to begin an actual racing career, the upcoming Gran Turismo could be a box office heavyweight for Sony. Or it could crash and burn before even getting to the finish line. Either way, if you’re excited about this movie, it’s likely you want to know where to watch Gran Turismo online.
Here’s everything we know about Gran Turismo from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp.

The movie will be out in U.K. theaters much earlier than in the U.S., with an August 9, 2023 release for U.K. audiences and an August 25th, 2023 release for U.S. audiences. Based on the electrifying true story of Jann Mardenborough, who turned a series of triumphs at Nissan’s sponsored video game competitions into a professional racing career, Gran Turismo promises a visually thrilling, immersive movie experience. Early reviews are also promising, with some already calling it one of the best video game adaptations ever. So when can you watch Gran Turismo on VOD, streaming, or even physical media?

Assuming Gran Turismo does well at the box office, we can expect the movie to be in theaters for roughly 4 weeks to 45 days. Sony in particular is known for giving their movies at least the standard four week window, so you will probably be able to rent or buy the film through the service of your choice by the first week of September in the U.K. and a couple of weeks after that in the U.S. Pretty much everyone will be able to watch the movie at home by the end of September. A physical media release is probable somewhere in that range of time, but we certainly can’t say when.

As most Sony releases are getting a Netflix exclusive release these days, we can guess with some accuracy that Gran Turismo will be on Netflix just in time for the 2023 holiday season.

About Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is indeed based on a true story, making it one of the most unique video game adaptations of all time. A British professional racing driver, Jann Mardenborough rose to prominence in 2011 at the age of 19. It was then he defeated 90 thousand other entrants in the GT Academy TV series, which awarded supremely talented Gran Turismo players the opportunity to embark on a legitimate racing career through a partnership with Nissan.

Still racing at time of writing, Mardenborough contributed to the Gran Turismo as a co-producer, stunt driver, and consultant for director Neill Blomkamp (from a script by Jason Hall and Zach Baylin). His connection to the film is profound, and such participation will no doubt add a human element to this racing fan’s cinematic dream. You’ll be able to see for yourself if Gran Turismo can keep the pace beginning August 9th.
