Prodigal Son: Season 3 – Everything You Should Know

Prodigal Son’s history is as complicated as the relationship between its protagonist and his father, you can never really anticipate where things will go, and that’s exactly what happened in 2021 when the show was canceled before the second season even finished airing. Despite being popular among fans of crime dramas, the series’ ratings dwindled with each season, and that led Fox to ultimately put a pin in Prodigal Son: Season 3 indefinitely, whereas the network’s other, more favored shows like Family Guy are still going strong.

Years have passed by since, and while there remains a devoted fan base for the show — owing to the giant cliffhanger ending of Season 2 — we haven’t heard from the showrunners about its renewal. As it stands, there just doesn’t seem to be enough of a movement for Prodigal Son: Season 3 to happen, though that doesn’t necessarily mean it never will.

When Is Prodigal Son: Season 3 Coming Out?

Unfortunately, Prodigal Son: Season 3 does not have a release date. Since its cancelation back in 2021 by Fox, the show was never picked up by another streamer, so a third season isn’t in the works.

Sometime after the series’ cancellation, multiple outlets reported that many platforms passed on the opportunity to have Prodigal Son: Season 3 made. HBO Max was one of the running contenders that had its eyes on the show, but it too turned down the offer, unlike it did with Warrior, Cinemax’s popular original which would have been shelved if the streamer hadn’t picked it up for a third season. The culprit behind HBO Max rejecting Prodigal Son: Season 3 was once again its low ratings, and even today, it seems as if the show is still haunted by the same misfortune.

Who Is In The Cast of Prodigal Son: Season 3?

If Prodigal Son: Season 3 ever were to happen, expect no major changes in the cast as just about everyone from the leads to the supporting actors was keen on returning in a third season. Though they may be interested in reprising their roles, the second season’s cliffhanger ending did leave the fate of Martin Whitley up in the air as Malcolm had stabbed him, so we can’t say for sure whether that means certain death for the character, and if it does, then we simply won’t be seeing Michael Sheen as The Surgeon again.

Tom Payne returning as the show’s protagonist and witty profiler Malcolm Bright is a done deal, and so is Lou Diamond Phillips coming back as police chief Gil Arroyo since the creators heavily implied that Gil’s romance with Jessica Whitley, played by Bellamy Young, would be a major beat of Prodigal Son: Season 3. Other recurring characters will likely include Aurora Perrineau‘s Dani Powell, Halston Sage as Ainsley Whitly, Frank Harts as JT Tarmel, and Keiko Agena‘s geeky Edrisa Tanaka.

The cast was under the impression that Prodigal Son would be continuing past its second season because of the cliffhanger finale greenlit by Fox, but when they got wind of the show getting canned, that left everyone disappointed. Afterwards the showrunners tried their very best to get Prodigal Son: Season 3 approved, though that bore no fruit as you can see. The odds are severely stacked against the series’ revival, so at the moment, the best move on the board seems to be keeping your fingers crossed.
