Parents and Families

Introduction

We believe that every child or young person should be able to grow up free from the fear of abuse or neglect.

This section of our website is for families, carers and anyone else who may be concerned about the well being of a child or young person to:

  • Explains what child abuse is and tells you what to do if you are concerned about a child or young person
  • Provides guidance for families about the local child protection process
  • Has information about some things that may be worrying you, like bullying and internet safety, with links to more information on other websites.

There are also links and telephone numbers for people who can help, including charities, local, and national organisations that offer support to children and families on wide range of issues and links to websites you may find useful.

You may be visiting this site just for general information. However, if you or any child or young person you know is being abused or neglected, please pick up the telephone and ring the following:

The Children Act (1989) makes it clear that a child's welfare is of paramount importance. The local authority and/or police have a duty to investigate where there is any concern for a child's well being.

Where there is a risk to the life of the child or a likelihood of serious immediate harm, the Social Services department or the police would act quickly to secure their immediate safety.

The person providing information or making an allegation is encouraged to provide their name but this will not be disclosed to members of the family in question without consent.
